| Holy crap. My last summer in the 35-39 age group. How the hell did that happen? And it was a pretty good one. My main race….ummm, ”A-race” was Challenge Atlantic City 70.3 in late June, so everything beyond that was just going to be fun. For me, the tri season started with the Tri-It Festival Sprint in Lums Pond State Park in Bear, Delaware. Super casual race. Pretty fun course. Loved that the run was on soft trails. Definitely was glad I did a tune up race because my swim was erratic, for whatever reason I couldn’t find a rhythm. And my transitions were a disaster…I think I must have brushed my teeth, combed my hair, and “put on my face” because of how long they were. Crazy. The next race up with Challenge Atlantic City. My goal was to PR…my stretch goal was to place. I PRed by almost ten minutes (even though the bike was two miles long) but didn’t place. I gave up a lot of spots on the run. Like a lot. It’s definitely an area I still have a lot to improve on…especially with longer distance races. Highlight of the race was crossing the finish line carrying my son. What an awesome, awesome memory. That’s something so unique to Challenge. The race is now an Ironman branded race…sigh. Then two DQ Sports Races. Presidential Lakes and Medford Lakes. Presidential Lakes was fast and furious and beware of the lake water. Gross. Got 1st in my Age Group and got passed on the bike like i was riding still. Medford Lakes was awesome because for all of the swim and for four glorious miles of the bike, I lead the whole race. It was just me and the motorcade. Badass. I gave a couple of spots, but had a great finish. So four races. Three Age Group firsts. One pretty good PR. I’m happy. Things I learned…a tune up race is always a good thing after the long cold winter. Especially if you have a big race early on in the season. Early year long(ish) distance running races certainly help set up the season. Things I learned…a tune up race is always a good thing after the long cold winter. Just saying. Don’t try a type of gel you’ve never tried before out on a course. Cramps. Yikes. Profile Design wheels are really, really, really fast. Really. Just seeing the red cones marking the course makes me have to go. Seriously, there’s a race photo of me standing in line for the portapotty. |
